Hu Jintao was born on July 30, 1942, in Changsha, Hunan Province. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1963. He received a bachelor's degree in Chinese Literature from the University of Science and Technology of China. He studied at Beijing Institute of Aeronautics until 1972, when he began working at the Central Committee's Organization Department
In 1980, he became head of the General Office of the Central Committee with responsibility for propaganda work. In 1983, he became head of the Propaganda Department of the Communist Youth League. He rose to become General Secretary of the Communist Party of China in 2003 after the death of President Jiang Zemin.
His term ends in 2012.
